MONUMENT DAY 2018
On 9 September 2018, the Alexander Haus was open for the annual Monument Day. More than 250 people visited on a glorious day.
The house was open from 12pm to 6pm. Updates were provided about the history of the house and the renovation works.
At 1pm, we remembered our dear friend and monument architect Andreas Potthoff who oversaw the lake house renovations from the very beginning until his tragic death in the summer of 2018.

TAG DES OFFENEN DENKMALS 2018
Am 9. September 2018 war das Alexander Haus zum Tag des Offenen Denkmals öffnen. Das Haus war von 12-18 Uhr geöffnet. Es wurde Erläuterungen zur Geschichte und der Restaurierung des Sommerhauses geben. Um 13 Uhr haben wir unseres Freundes und Architekten Andreas Potthoff gedacht, der die Instandsetzung des Sommerhauses von Anfang an bis zu seinem tragischen Unfalltod im Sommer 2018 geleitet hatte.

The Alexander Haus deeply mourns Andreas Potthoff, who died form a terrible accident with his boat on 1 July 2018.
Andreas, who has led the restoration works for the Lake House from the very beginning, was not only an excellent architect and highly knowledgable and sensitive monument expert, but also a great supporter of the Alexander Haus and its aims of remembrance, reconciliation, dialogue and education. Even more important, we have lost in Andreas a truly warm, open and compassionate friend. Andreas was always most interested in the human aspect of architecture and this shows in his work.
As Alexander Haus, we remain deeply grateful for his immense contributions in making the Lake House and its surrounding once again a place of beauty, peace and encounter of people. We know that we cannot fill his place, but we will do everything we can to continue and complete his work on the Alexander Haus and will honour his legacy.
Our thoughts and prayers in these troubled days are with Andreas' family.

Andreas, der die Restaurierung des Sommerhauses vom ersten Moment begleitet hat, war nicht nur ein ausgezeichneter Architekt und kenntnisreicher und sensibler Denkmalspezialist, sondern ebenso ein großartiger Unterstützer des Alexander Hauses und seiner Ideale von Erinnerung, Versöhnung, Dialog und Bildung. Vor allem aber haben wir in Andreas einen überaus warmherzigen, offenen und leidenschaftlichen Freund verloren. Andreas war immer am meisten an den menschlichen Aspekten der Architektur interessiert und das zeigt sich in seiner Arbeit.
Als Alexander Haus sind wir zutiefst dankbar für seinen immensen Beitrag, das Sommerhaus und seine Umgebung wieder zu einem Ort der Schönheit, des Friedens und der Begegnung von Menschen zu machen. Wir wissen, dass wir die Lücke nicht füllen können, die er hinterlässt, aber wir werden alles tun, um seine Arbeit am Alexander Haus fortzusetzen und zu vollenden und werden sein Werk stets bewahren.
Unsere Gedanken und Gebete in diesen schwierigen Tagen sind bei Andreas' Familie.

Motto: „Get out of your living-rooms, put on your sports shoes and join the Groß Glienicke Soccer Fun Tournament!”
Young and old, girls and boys, old timers and more recently arrived age 14 to 99 to meet in parallel to the World Cup to sign up for a unique soccer tournament. Before kick-off, the lot determines who forms a team. It’s the way the newly formed teams play together that will count as much as the goals scored. The tournament takes place as a prelude to the Village Festival, where in the afternoon the award ceremony will take place. The SV Babelsberg 03 rewards participants with tickets to one of its games.
For more than a year, the Community Dialogue Programme of the Alexander-Haus e.V. has been using individual and social history to bring people together and to strengthen social cohesion. All activities are grouped around questions of identity and togetherness. The players will be invited to comment on their experiences and own soccer stories. Amanda Harding has designed the programme. She is a board member. After a series of spoken dialogue events and "Art and Food" gatherings, the football tournament is a first experience combining sport and dialogue. Das Community Dialogue Programm des Alexander-Haus e.V. setzt seit über einem Jahr individuelle und gesellschaftliche Geschichte dafür ein, Menschen zusammen zu bringen und den sozialen Zusammenhalt zu stärken. Im Zentrum stehen Fragen der Identität und des Miteinander. Amanda Harding hat das Programm konzipiert. Sie ist im Vorstand des Vereins. Nach einer Gesprächsreihe und mehreren Begegnungen bei „Kunst und Kochen“ bildet das Fußball-Turnier die erste Erfahrung mit der Kombination aus einer sportlichen Disziplin und Dialog. Renovations continue
Renovations continue at the Lake House.
New water, sewer, electric and heat systems have been installed. Paint colours have been tested inside, and various shades of oil have been tested on the exterior wooden walls.
Next the chimneys have to be rebuilt and the floors put back....
All very exciting!
"Finding Our Place in History" workshop
Last weekend (1-3 June) the Alexander Haus helped facilitate a youth seminar and 'happening' at the Lake House.
In association with UK-German Connections (a collaboration between the UK and German governments), 25 students from the UK and 25 students from Germany participated in a thee-day seminar: 'finding our place in history'.
They visited the house and the Berlin Wall memorial at Groß Glienicke See, took part in a Shabbat celebration, and shared stories and thoughtful reflections on "The House By The Lake" and the history of the 20th Century.
It was a deeply moving and inspiring weekend - a melting pot of history, identity and reconciliation.

Education pilot programme with Tiergarten School
Pupils of the tenth, eleventh and twelfth years of the Tiergarten Gymnasium in Berlin discussed with the British journalist and author Thomas Harding and the member of parliament for the constituency Berlin-Mitte. Eva Högl.
The reason for the event was a cooperation between the school and the Alexanderhaus. In the future, the school will give our students various opportunities for social engagement and intercultural encounters.

Winterfest 2017

The Community Winterfest
On 24 November, the Alexander Haus hosted a "Winterfest" with our friends in the community and at the local refugee shelter.
Motivated by the inspiring monthly encounters at the Community Dialogue meetings, the so called “Sunday Group” grew increasingly curious to find out more about the diverse traditions of celebrating. The participants therefore decided to take the lead and host a first event of their own at the local refugee shelter.
With a lovely spirit that reminded of the warm welcoming energy in 2015, an organizing team of four women from the shelter and about 10 Groß Glienicke based activists was formed. Together they managed to get the funding -thanks again to “Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe Potsdam e.V.”. They baked, cooked and decorated the rooms. A volunteer collected presents enabling local kids to finally hand over nicely decorated personalized parcels to the 28 children living at the shelter.
Together we enjoyed a great variety of music reaching from secular winter songs, each one advent and Azerbaijani peace song, traditional European brass music as well as Arabic or oriental dance music and rap.
A heartwarming event shared by 120 guests of all ages.

Das Community-Winterfest
Von den Begegnungen der monatlichen Gemeinschafts-Dialoge inspiriert und erfüllt von Neugierde auf die verschiedenen Traditionen des Feierns, ergriffen die Teilnehmenden der sogenannten „Sonntagsgruppe“ die Initiative. Am 24. November realisierten sie eine erste eigene Veranstaltung: das Winterfest in der GU Seeburger Chaussee.
Mit einem herzlichen Elan, der an die willkommen heißende Energie von 2015 erinnerte, bildeten vier Frauen aus der Unterkunft und rund 10 Groß-Glienickerinnen und Groß Glienicker ein Team. Gemeinsam organisierten sie die Finanzierung – noch einmal danke an "Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe Potsdam e.V." Sie kochten, backten und schmückten die Räume. Eine Freiwillige warb Geschenke ein, so dass Kinder aus dem Ort den 28 in der Unterkunft lebenden Kindern hübsch verpackte, persönlich gewidmete Päckchen übergeben konnten.
Die Musik variierte von weltlichen Winter-, einem Advents- und einem aserbaidschanischen Friedenslied, traditioneller europäischer Blasmusik, arabischer oder orientalischer Tanzmusik sowie Rap.
Ein herzerwärmendes Fest mit 120 Gästen jeden Alters.

Repairs to Lake House Stage 2
The repairs to the Lake House are coming along.
At a meeting in Berlin last week, historic denkmal architect Mr Pothoff presented his detailed plans for the renovations.
Mechanical engineer Mr Duba also presented his plans updating the heating, electric, plumbing, and telephone/ internet systems.
A tender package is now being submitted to various contractors. We look forward to work starting soon.

We are very pleased to invite you to our "Away Day". Join us for a relaxing and inspiring day! We are going to see "Knigge in Kabul". This is a unique performance by the Kabul theatre cooperative, AZDAR, playing at the Hans Otto Theatre in Potsdam.
You can find out more about the history of AZDAR and the performance below. We have organised two meeting points:
Option 1. 2.30 pm, Gutstor (Neugierde). A minibus will take us to the Café Fluxus, arriving about 3.00 p.m. Of course you can arrive individually and meet us there. We invite you to coffee and cake and to meet the actors for a chat.
Option 2. 4.20 pm, meet at the stage entrance of the Hans-Otto Theatre and join us for a tour through the theatre with the theatre expert, Christopher Hanf.
Performance starts at 6 pm. Return to Gross Glienicke at approx. 8:30 pm

"Knigge in Kabul"
INFORMATION
This "musical discourse theatre play" was developed by the actors of AZDAR, the Berlin director Max Martens and the dramaturge Jana Papenbroock. It will be performed once in the series "Refugee Club" in the riding hall of the Hans Otto Theatre. The performance is in Dari with German, English and Arabic surtitles.
Playing time is 70 minutes followed by a concert. Tip Berlin: "To scream funny. Brilliant joke "
Background to AZDAR Theatre
AZDAR Theatre was founded in 2006 by French film director, Guilda Chahverdi, and a number of young actors. The group unites graduates of the Faculté des Beaux-Arts in Kabul, whose mission is to transport Afghan culture through theatre and to preserve Afghan cultural values. AZDAR Theater has twice been invited to the International Theatre Festival in New Dehli: in 2012 with "Le Petit Prince" and in 2013 with "L'Histoire du Tigre". Ahmad Nasir Formuli, actor, director and puppeteer, participated in the 2014 Theatertreffen in Berlin (international forum).

Zur Aufführung „Knigge in Kabul“
INFORMATION
Das „musikalische Diskurstheaterstück“ ist eine Stückentwicklung der Schauspieler von AZDAR, des Berliner Regisseurs Max Martens und der Dramaturgin Jana Papenbroock. Es wird einmalig im Rahmen der Reihe „Refugee Club“ in der Reithalle des Hans Otto Theater aufgeführt.

Zur Geschichte von „AZDAR Theatre“
Das „AZDAR Theatre“ wurde im Jahr 2006 von der französischen Filmregisseurin Guilda Chahverdi und einigen jungen Schauspielern gegründet. Die Gruppe vereinigt Abgänger der „Faculté des Beaux-Arts“ in Kabul, denen es ein Anliegen ist, afghanische Kultur mit den Mitteln des Theaters zu transportieren, damit kulturelle Werte in Afghanistan zu retten und zu erhalten. „AZDAR Theatre“ ist zweimal ans internationale Theaterfestival in Neu Dehli eingeladen worden, im Jahr 2012 mit „Le Petit Prince“ und 2013 mit „L’Histoire du Tigre“. Ahmad Nasir Formuli, Schauspieler, Regisseur und Puppenspieler, hat 2014 am Theatertreffen in Berlin (internationales Forum) teilgenommen.
Im Dezember 2014 fand die erste Vorstellung des Stückes “Heart Beat – the silence after the explosion” von AZDAR in Kabul statt. Ein Selbstmordattentäter drang in die vollbesetzte Vorstellung im Centre Culturel Français in Kabul ein. Bei der Explosion kam ein Mann, der einer deutschen NGO angehörte, ums Leben, und 20 Menschen wurden verletzt. Die Taliban bekannte sich zu dem Anschlag. In dem Stück, das sich mit den Folgen von Bombenattentaten auf das Zusammenleben der afghanischen Gesellschaft auseinandersetzte, sahen sie eine Verunglimpfung des Islams und eine Propaganda gegen den Dschihad. Alle Mitglieder sind seither bedroht worden, weshalb die Gruppe in Afghanistan nicht mehr spielen kann.
Auf Einladung des Kunstfestes und des Deutschen Nationaltheaters Weimar, gefördert durch die Bundeskulturstiftung und das Goetheinstitut, erarbeitet das Kollektiv mehrere große sowie kleine Produktionen in Weimar und Berlin. AZDAR tritt damit europaweit auf. „Knigge in Kabul“ ist eine dieser Produktionen.

Denkmal Tag 2017
We had a wonderful Denkmal Tag (monument day) this year. Over 150 on Sunday 10th September. Most of our guests came from Groß Glienicke, Potsdam and Berlin, but others came from further afield, including the UK, USA and France.
The house was looking beautiful, with clear skies and sun pouring through the windows. The garden had recently been tidied and our visitors enjoyed walking around taking in the view.
Thank you to all the volunteers who helped on the day, particularly, Siggi, Dieter, Julia and Moritz who helped with the tours and Ingrid who did a wonderful job with the food.

We also hosted a visit from the Netherlands on Saturday 9 September, the weather was wetter and more chilly, but it was wonderful to provide a tour to our guests who particularly liked the Delft tiles above the fireplace.
Alexander Haus hosts Third Community Dialogue workshop

Alexander Haus held its third Community Dialogue workshop in July.
The project aims to use history to bring people together from different backgrounds to foster social cohesion.
Fully-funded by the EVZ foundation (Stiftung Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft), this one-year project includes four dialogue workshops involving newly arrived refugees and local residents, innovative story telling approaches (through art, video, sport, etc) and a training programme to ensure project sustainability.

Im Juli veranstaltete das Alexander Haus das dritte Treffen der Gemeinschafts-Dialoge. Gemeinschafts-Dialoge (Community Dialogue) sind eine Gesprächsreihe, die Menschen mit verschiedenen Hintergründen über gemeinsames Erinnern und den Austausch von Geschichte zusammenbringt in der Absicht, den sozialen Zusammenhalt zu stärken. Gemeinschafts-Dialoge bieten einen geschützteren Raum, in welchem alle Erfahrungen gleichwertig nebeneinanderstehen.
Die Stiftung „Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft“ finanziert das einjährige Projekt. Es beinhaltet acht Workshops mit alteingesessenen und neu angekommenen Groß Glienicker_innen und Potsdamer_innen, innovativen Story-Telling Ansätzen (durch Kunst, Video, Sport etc.) und einem Workshop-Leiter Programm für eine nachhaltige Wirkung.

07 June 2017: The internationally renowned offices, David Chipperfield Architects and Arup, are jointly supporting the Alexander Haus project in Groß Glienicke, Potsdam. The Berlin office of David Chipperfield Architects recently presented the masterplan for the new seminar complex that will be built as an entirely timber construction on the northern part of the property, facing the estate park. The new buildings are sensitively integrated in the context and complement and enhance the historic summer house built in the 1920s. The concept design is to be completed by spring 2018.
The new seminar building and guest house, comprising two longitudinal, low-lying volumes, are carefully embedded in their rural surroundings, emulating the scale and typology of the lakeside plot. Through their positioning on the fringes of the Groß Glienicke estate at the north end of the site, the ensemble establishes sufficient distance to the Alexander House, without forfeiting an immediate dialogue between the old and new. The timber construction and the wooden cladding of the new buildings are inspired by the existing historic house, perpetuating its summery, serene character.
Arup Germany will provide structural, mechanical and electrical, fire, and building physics design consultancy services for the new buildings. At the core of Arup’s proposals will be environmentally sustainable solutions that are simple for the end-users to operate and maintain, but also cost-effective and robust.

Background Information:
The Alexander Haus is a fast-growing education and reconciliation project located in Groß Glienicke, Potsdam. At the heart of the Alexander Haus project is a small and elegant wooden lake house which was built in 1927 by the prominent Jewish physician Dr Alfred Alexander. After the Alexander family fled from Germany in 1936, four other families lived in the house including the Nazi composer, Will Meisel. In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built through the garden cutting the house off from the lake. In 2005, the property was abandoned and soon after the house was slated to be demolished.
In 2013, members of the Alexander family joined with the local residents of Groß Glienicke and successfully registered the house as a protected monument (‘Denkmal’). The house is currently being renovated to its 1927 condition. Once a permanent exhibition is installed, the house will be open to the public for educational tours and cultural events. The history of the Lake House is described in the international bestselling book “House by the Lake” (“Sommerhaus am See”).
Meanwhile, we are developing a new world class seminar facility at the Alexander Haus which will accommodate approximately 40 persons overnight or 70 day visitors. This new seminar facility will be a place of dialogue and conversation, where the Alexander Haus and other organisations (including Muslim and Jewish scholarship groups) will host an array of educational, tolerance and leadership programmes.
The Alexander Haus has so far attracted funding from the German Federal Government, the State of Brandenburg, the City of Potsdam, EVZ, International Charitable Fund, the Sternberg Foundation, the Welton Trust, and the Wingate Trust, along with over a hundred donations from individuals in more than 20 countries around the world. Future funding will come from a mix of government and private sources.

07. Juni 2017: Die international renommierten Büros David Chipperfield Architects und Arup Ingenieure unterstützen gemeinsam das Alexander Haus Projekt in Groß Glienicke bei Potsdam. Das Berliner Büro von David Chipperfield Architects präsentierte kürzlich den Masterplan für das neue Seminargebäude, das auf dem nördlichen, dem Gutspark zugewandten Teil des Grundstücks als reiner Holzbau errichtet werden soll. Die Neubauten fügen sich dabei sensibel in den Kontext ein und ergänzen und erweitern das historische Sommerhaus aus den 1920er Jahren. Bis zum 2. Quartal 2018 soll die Konzeptplanung abgeschlossen werden.
Behutsam in die kleinteilige ländliche Umgebung eingebettet, passt sich das neue Seminar- und Gästehaus in Form zweier langgestreckter niedriger Riegel in Maßstab und Typologie dem tiefen Seegrundstück an. Durch die Platzierung im nördlichen Bereich, am Saum des Gutsparks von Groß Glienicke schafft der Neubau ausreichend Distanz zum historischen Landhaus, ohne dadurch den unmittelbaren Dialog von Alt und Neu aufzugeben. Als konstruktive Holzbauten mit hölzernen Fassadenbekleidungen beziehen sich die Gebäude direkt auf das historische Alexander Haus und schreiben dessen sommerlich heiteren Charakter fort.
Arup übernimmt die Planung für das Tragwerk, die technische Gebäudeausrüstung, den Brandschutz und die Bauphysik der neuen Gebäude. Im Mittelpunkt stehen ökologisch nachhaltige Lösungen, die für den Nutzer leicht zu bedienen und leicht zu warten sind und gleichzeitig für Kosteneffizienz und eine robuste Bauweise stehen.

Das Alexander Haus ist ein schnell wachsendes Bildungs- und Versöhnungsprojekt in Groß Glienicke, Potsdam. Im Herzen des Alexander Haus-Projekts befindet sich ein kleines und elegantes Holzhaus, das 1927 von dem prominenten jüdischen Arzt Dr. Alfred Alexander erbaut wurde. Nachdem die Familie Alexander 1936 aus Deutschland geflohen war, lebten vier weitere Familien im Haus, darunter der Nazi-Komponist Will Meisel. 1961 wurde die Berliner Mauer quer durch den Garten gebaut und das Haus vom See abgeschnitten. Im Jahr 2005 wurde das Grundstück auf- und das Haus bald darauf zum Abriss freigegeben.
Im Jahr 2013 schlossen sich Mitglieder der Familie Alexander mit den Anwohnern von Groß Glienicke zusammen und ließen das Haus als Denkmal schützen. Das Haus wird zurzeit renoviert und auf den Stand von 1927 rückgeführt. Sobald die ständige Ausstellung eingerichtet ist, wird das Haus der Öffentlichkeit für pädagogische Führungen und kulturelle Veranstaltungen offen stehen. Die Geschichte des Gebäudes wird im internationalen Bestsellerbuch "Sommerhaus am See“ beschrieben.
In der Zwischenzeit entsteht neben dem Alexander Haus eine neue Weltklasse-Seminaranlage, die etwa 40 Gästen Schlafplatz bietet bzw. bis zu 70 Tagesgäste unterbringen kann. Diese neue Seminareinrichtung wird ein Ort des Dialogs und des Austauschs sein, an dem das Alexander Haus und andere Organisationen (einschließlich muslimischer und jüdischer Stipendiengruppen) eine Reihe von Bildungs-, Toleranz- und Führungsprogrammen veranstalten werden.
Das Alexander Haus wurde bislang von der Bundesregierung, dem Land Brandenburg, der Stadt Potsdam, der Stiftung Erinnerung Verantwortung Zukunft (EVZ), International Charitable Fund (ICF), der Sternberg-Stiftung, der Welton-Stiftung und dem Wingate Charitable Trust sowie mit über hundert Spenden von Einzelpersonen aus über 20 Ländern finanziell unterstützt. Künftig wird sich das Projekt finanziell aus einer Mischung staatlicher und privater Quellen speisen.
